The annual Indianapolis 500 is an 500-mile race held each May in Speedway, Indiana. The race, which dates to 1911, is a signature race of the Verizon INDYCAR Series, and is often known as the “Indy 500”, or sometimes just “The 500.” Each year, The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is filled with Indianapolis 500 Ticket Holders, often with numbers approaching 300,000 spectators in both the Grandstands and the Infield.
“The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” as the Indy 500 is sometimes known, is one of the three most prestigious auto races in the world with The Monaco Grand Prix and the 24 hours of Le Mans rounding out what is known as The Triple Crown of Motorsports. 2016 saw the 100th version of the race, and drew an estimated 350,000 Ticket holders to watch the 33-car field take to The Brickyard.
Indianapolis Motor Speedway itself is world famous, and is the largest sports venue in the world by total ticketed spectator capacity. The 2.5-miles track is a “rectangular oval,” featuring four ninety degree turns and 2 sets of straightaways to form a rounded rectangle. The track was originally paved with bricks, leading to the nickname, “The Brickyard,” though today, only a 3-foot wide section of the brinks remain at the start/finish lines.
The Indianapolis 500 Race has several traditions, though the most famous is arguably the “Milk Toast” that the race’s winner gives from the winners circle. . This tradition started with Indy 500 winner Louis Meyer in 1933, and become tradition after 1936.
